DimensionM Update 2/3/09: After making a few inquiries I have come to the following understanding of the DimensinM gaming system:

If my understanding of DimensionM offering is correct, the positive research results of incorporating the game into a schools curriculum are based on students participating in the online, Multiplayer Mission Pack (the version where students’ progress reports are generated, students participate in various competitions, and where teachers can “adjust” math questions to correlate with their math class lessons). However, the Multiplayer Mission Pack has been priced by Tabula Digita so that only districts with 15,000+ students can afford to enroll (target marketing this full version of the game exclusively to large school districts was at best, only vaguely referred to in the Tabula Digita presentation that I attended at the 2009 FETC).

The CD (included in the Pearson MS Math 2010 book) is a single player game, with a single mission online version available, both of which do not include the aforementioned features and benefits included with the online Multiplayer Mission Pack.

DimensionM Overview:

While at a tech conference this week I attended a presentation by Mr. Etuk, CEO of a new educational gaming company called DimensionM. Ok... I know what you are thinking, another attempt to waste our schools dollars and our students/teachers time with online games. Here is the shocker, this math program comes with proven research stats from some major educational intuitions. Consider if you will:

  • 100 NYC schools enrolled in DimensionM this past school year after an initial test last year with 2 schools. Standardized math test results, went from a 78% passing to a 83%.

  • Orange County Florida, standardized test scores in math DOUBLED from a 37% success rate to a75%.
These are just the stats that I took notes on, there were additional school districts with similar results. Amazing, a gaming system that has proven, field tested research to back it up. No wonder the math publisher, Pearson Hall is going to include DimensionM in its new text books this coming school year.

Still not convinced, please visit the DimensionM National Championships on YouTube and watch the national competition. That's right, this company has local, regional, and a national competition that students compete in.

Another amazing outcome from this gaming system is that it is recommended that classrooms time spend on the game is kept from 15 to 30 minutes per week. One recommendation is the it's played every Friday for 15 minutes based on next week’s math lessons (teacher's select the math strands for the students game, sort of a pretest), students get so competitive that they insist on knowing how to solve the necessary math skills so that their score/ranking remains high.

Hold on to your hats, get your gaming hat on cause this is going to be a future trend in education. Mr. Etuk noted that they are developing the game to accommodate all core subjects from K-12.
