There seems to be a movement afoot towards open source textbooks. Speaking on TED network, Professor Richard Baraniuk has created a website called Connexions that will enable educators to "create, rip, mix and burn" coursework.

FlexBooks	Site allows users to customize use reviewed coursework, create by "picking and choosing" units or to actually "cut and paste" text from existing coursework.
